The Passage
by Tristano di Robilant, 2025
Robilant was inspired by a short story by Jorge Luis Borges, The House of Asterion, based on the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. The story is narrated by the minotaur, Asterion, who lives in the labyrinth, imagining what life would be like in outside world. Through the course of the story, the 'monster' becomes humanised, and the reader is left to question the meaning of freedom, and redemption.
"These works began with this idea of a passage, what you would call a ‘traversata’ in Italian. There's a link which is slightly more about going over a body of water, over sea. By passage I mean also a form of transmutation of one's being, not necessarily a physical passage, but the passage of time, a passage of being, or some form of transformation."
