Between Mind and Land
by Pam Evelyn, 2025
Pam Evelyn began working on Between Mind and Land during an artist’s residency in Newlyn, Cornwall. She greatly enjoyed the etching process, particularly the use of carborundum; a grit which is applied to the etching plate creating richly textured works, and resulting in deep colours.
Evelyn describes herself as a landscape artist, “but where the landscape might more accurately be described as a “mindscape”: the outcome of being removed from any direct subject.” Evelyn’s time in Newlyn provided a contrast to her London studio, and her work during this period translates the energy of the surrounding wildlife.
"Down in Cornwall, more in the countryside, the isolation is helpful to have that space and that time to see what’s happening in the studio. What I was really trying to do was familiarise myself with how significant doubt is, and stretching out that period of time which happens in the studio where things are not resolved."
